- Make ready 3/4 cup idli rava
- Get 1/2 cup moong dal washed and soaked

- Get 3-4 tbsp finely chopped fresh coconut

Instead of usual upma, this is a nice alternative to surprise the kids. Thavala Adai is a heavy yet tasty snack or dinner recipe prepared in Tamil Nadu. It is a very filling recipe and my grandma used to make it with much passion. Loaded with lentils and rice this is liked by people of all ages.
Instructions to make Thavala adai:
- Soak arhar(tur) dal and chana dal together. Soak other two dal separately. Let them soak for at least 3 hours.
- Now grind urad dal, green chillies and ginger as fine paste. Mixture of arhar dal and chana dal a bit coarsely ground.
- Keep moong dal aside and grind the remaining to a smooth paste. Mix all the grounded dals.
- Now add soaked moong dal, idli rava, coconut, salt and coriander leaves and make a thick batter. Leave this batter aside for 4 hours.
- Shape the vadas just like medu vada and deep fry them in hot oil till golden brown.
- Serve these crispy, crunchy and nutritional vadas with coconut chutney and tomato ketchup.
Some make the powder in advance and store it and make it whenever necessary. This is a Tanjavur District dish of Tamil Nadu. Put it in a mixie along with red chillies, pepper and cumin. Thavala Adai is a traditional South Indian recipe which is made of dal and is very interesting to eat without any side dish too. You can enjoy this as a snack during your tea time with your friends and family.
